E-commerce website development cost in India: build, monthly fees and per-order charges

What an online store costs in India in 2026: build prices, Shopify plans in rupees, payment gateway and shipping charges, and a worked monthly example.

By Himanshu Mishra, founder of BuildHarbor. Published .

An online store has three kinds of cost: the one-time build, a monthly bill for the platform, hosting and apps, and charges on every order for payments and shipping. Most quotes only talk about the first. This guide covers all three, with current figures in rupees, so you can work out what a store will really cost to launch and run.

For websites in general, including brochure sites and GST on development, see our guide to website development cost in India.

The short answer

Market prices are very wide. Hostinger's 2026 guide puts a basic store built from templates or a website builder at ₹15,000–₹50,000, and custom e-commerce development anywhere from ₹80,000 to ₹40,00,000 or more, depending on features. Its figures exclude GST.

The pricing page lists exactly what our store package includes. The rest of this guide explains what moves a store's cost up or down.

What decides the build cost

  • Products and variants. Fifty products in three sizes is 150 variants to set up, each with a price, stock level and photo. Clean product data from a spreadsheet makes this much faster.
  • Custom design or a theme. A theme is quicker. A custom design is planned around your products and your customers on a phone, which is where most Indian shoppers buy.
  • Checkout and payments. UPI, cards and netbanking through one gateway are standard. A second gateway, partial cash on delivery or EMI options each add setup and testing.
  • Shipping rules. Delivery charges by pincode or weight, free-shipping thresholds, and limiting cash on delivery to pincodes you trust all need configuring.
  • Customer accounts and B2B pricing. Logins, order history, wholesale price lists and minimum order quantities are common for manufacturers, and they add real work.
  • Integrations. Courier aggregators, accounting software, a CRM or WhatsApp order updates each need building and testing end to end.
  • Migration. Moving from an old store means carrying products, customers and URLs across, with redirects so existing Google traffic isn't lost.
  • Photos and descriptions. Product photography and copy are often the slowest part. Decide early who is producing them.

Monthly running costs

Platform plan

On Shopify India, as listed on 28 October 2026, plans cost ₹1,499 a month on Basic, ₹5,599 on Grow and ₹22,680 on Advanced when paid yearly (₹1,994, ₹7,447 and ₹30,164 when paid monthly). Shopify also charges a fee on each order processed through a third-party payment provider: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. Our platform comparison explains when that fee matters.

A WooCommerce or custom store has no platform subscription or platform order fee. You pay for hosting instead. Hostinger's guide lists web hosting from ₹69 to ₹799 a month and higher tiers up to about ₹2,500.

Apps, plugins and maintenance

Hostinger estimates Shopify apps at ₹800–₹8,000 a month or more, and WooCommerce plugins at ₹3,000–₹16,000. Updates, security fixes and small changes need someone responsible for them: our maintenance plans start at ₹2,500 a month with a defined scope.

Charges on every order

  • Payment gateway. Razorpay's standard plan charges a 2% platform fee on domestic cards, netbanking, wallets and UPI, plus 18% GST on that fee: about 2.36% of each payment.
  • Shipping. Courier aggregators charge by weight and destination. Shiprocket's pricing page, for example, lists an average shipment cost of ₹36 to ₹45 depending on the plan, with plan fees from free to ₹799 a month. Heavier or bulkier products cost more.
  • Cash on delivery. Couriers usually add a COD charge, and returned COD orders cost you shipping both ways. That's why many stores limit COD by pincode or order value.

A worked example: ₹3,00,000 of sales a month

Here is what the platform and payment charges come to for a store selling ₹3,00,000 a month, paid through Razorpay. Shipping, apps and GST on subscriptions are left out because they vary most by business.

Monthly costShopify Basic + RazorpayCustom store + Razorpay
Platform plan₹1,499 (paid yearly)None (hosting as quoted)
Platform order fee₹6,000 (2%)None
Payment gateway (about 2.36%)₹7,080₹7,080
MaintenanceYour time, or a developer₹2,500 (BuildHarbor plan)
Total before shipping₹14,579₹9,580 plus hosting

At low sales the difference is small, and a hosted platform's convenience can be worth it. As sales grow, percentage fees grow with them, so the gap widens. Run the same sums with your own expected sales before you choose.

How to keep the cost down without cutting corners

  1. Launch with your best-selling products first and add the rest once the store is live.
  2. Prepare product data in one spreadsheet: names, prices, variants, weights and descriptions.
  3. Shoot photos on a plain background in good daylight before the build starts.
  4. Start with one payment gateway and one courier aggregator, and add more only if customers ask.
  5. Make sure the domain, hosting, gateway and code are in your name, so you never pay to move away.
